About
Biodiversity or Biological Diversity is the scientific term for life on earth. This basically refers not only to species but to the various ecosystems and also, the differences in genes within single species. In all parts of the world, species are depending on each other and living together. All living things are involved in this network of interdependent relationship which is otherwise referred to as ecosystem.
Elements of Healthy Ecosystem
A healthy ecosystem can be as simple as the following:
- Clean water
- Purified air
- Well maintained soil
- Regulated climate
- Recycled nutrients
- Enough food for everyone
They are providing resources and raw materials for medicines as well as other applications. Basically speaking, ecosystem is the foundation of civilization and sustainment of economies. It is that simple. Humans and animals can’t live without ecosystem services.
What’s the Role of Biodiversity?
Biodiversity is a key indicator of how healthy an ecosystem is. There are wide varieties of species that live better with threats than the limited number of them in a big population. Even if some species are impacted by climate change, human activities or pollution, ecosystem as whole might still be able to adapt and survive. On the other hand, extinction of any species can tip the balance of the ecosystem and create negative chain reaction.
