Packaging: Eco-Friendly Materials
When designing your next packaging, don’t forget the importance of the materials used.
Do you pack your product in rigid plastic packaging or a flexible bag? Which of the two is more environmentally friendly and why?
Advantages of flexible packaging to the environment
You probably already know it. Flexible packaging is highly considered for its numerous consumer benefits. Some of the benefits include ease of use, lightweight, break resistance and many sustainable benefits.
According to the Flexible Packaging Association (FPA), the production of flexible packaging requires fewer resources than other packaging formats.
The lightweight nature of flexible packaging ensures that the optimal amount of packaging is used with the least amount of resources required to protect the product.
In addition, the lower weight means that flexible packaging is far more cost-effective to transport, as more packaging can be accommodated per load. According to the FPA, it would take 26 truckloads of empty glass containers to transport packaging for the same amount of product. For flexible packaging, a truckload of empty flexible bags would suffice for the same amount.
When it comes to flexible packaging, there is also the option of opting for certain eco-friendly materials such as PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled), fully recyclable films, or even biodegradable or compostable films.
Flexible packaging: A sustainable approach
Aside from the materials needed to create the packaging, it is important to also consider sustainable practices that make a company or brand “green”. It really depends on the packaging or the printing process.
Did you know that digital printing is a far more sustainable option compared to analogue or conventional printing? It uses less energy, generates less waste and has a lower overall carbon footprint.
- Less impact on the environment
- Time savings during setup
- Savings in material and transport thanks to short runs
- Enables print on demand
- Less waste on unsold inventory
- Offers a streamlined ordering process that simplifies and saves time ordering and customizing your perfect packaging
While there are several different ways to improve the overall sustainability of a company, just focusing on the packaging is a big step towards a greener corporate future.
Remember that the packaging and printing you choose can result in less waste and lower carbon emissions.
