The farm-to-table method used in aquaculture differs from one species to the other. In general, there are 4 different stages used in the production chain and it all begins in the hatchery and ends at seafood counter into your nearest grocery market.
Depends on the Method Used
Each of the said stages will vary depending on the impact it creates to the environment and also, the quality and the safety of seafood being produced. This is the exact same reason why the Global Aquaculture Alliance has administered the Best Aquaculture Practices or BAP third-party certification program.
Back in the day, fish farms have had several issues with regards to the four stages of aquaculture. This is why BAP is created in order to improve fish farming industry in all parts of the world.
This is actually the only certification program that is covering every process of supply chain. You can be certain that your seafood was responsibly farmed so long as it has a BAP logo on it.
Brief Overview of the 4 Stages
As mentioned, the first stage in aquaculture production is hatchery wherein fish breeding, rearing of fish and hatching of eggs happens. The moment that these animals matured, they’ll be transferred to farms where they’re grown until harvest size and when that happens, they’re transported to processing facility, packed and then sent to grocery stores and food retailers.
